Why In Home TherapyWhat is the Parent-Care Giver Role in ABA TherapyQuestions About ABA TherapyWhen and How Much Therapy is NeededWhy choose Behavior Innovation Group
What does ABA Therapy do?
ABA therapy, when done correctly, decreases excessive undesired behavior like aggression and other potentially dangerous behavior. It also helps improve an individual’s attention, understanding of communication, social skills, safety skills, self-care, and regulation of emotions. Additionally, ABA therapy increases language and expressive communication skills.
What is ABA Therapy?
Therapies rooted in Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) are based on the science of learning and behavior. ABA therapy was first developed in the 1970’s and benefits from decades of research to support its effectiveness for making meaningful changes in individual behavior. These changes occur by modifying an individual’s environment to support and reinforce behaviors and essential skills. This promotes and ultimately leads to development and independence.
ABA therapy evolves and is inclusive of ethical obligations and improved practices. These ensure it is applied in a compassionate, trauma-informed, and least intrusive manner, as well as with a responsibility to obtain consent from clients whenever possible. There are many teaching methods and approaches which fall under the umbrella of ABA. It is endorsed by the U.S Surgeon General and is the current therapeutic gold standard to improve the lives of those affected by autism. ABA Therapy can also be beneficial for all people who wish to achieve a change in behavior.
How Much Does ABA Therapy Cost?
With a diagnosis from an M.D. or Ph.D. in place, ABA therapy for autism spectrum disorder is typically covered by health insurance plans. The amounts and details of coverage can vary between insurance providers and plans.
Though insurance can be confusing, understanding insurance coverage for ABA therapy services can help you navigate the essential aspects of coverage for your child’s ABA therapy. Our team is also here to help!
Private Pay is based on an hourly rate or package rate based on the needs of the child/family. Once the initial consultation/assessment are completed a quote for services can be provided.
What services are included?
When you sign up to have your child receive ABA therapy, we create an individualized, unique plan for your child that focuses on increasing specific desired behaviors and skills, and decreasing unwanted behaviors. Unlike Speech, PT, or OT, ABA generally works best for autistic kids when they receive services intensively every week. On average, clients receive 24-30 hours a week, depending on the child’s needs.
Each child's needs are unique but the therapy typically focuses on the following:
Social-skills training
Facilitation of play dates
Communication training
Toilet training
Parent training
Functional living training
Behavior supports and interventions
Cognitive skill training
Executive functioning
Why is ABA therapy so important even if my child receives speech therapy, occupational therapy, and social work?
ABA therapy is important alongside speech, occupational, and social work because it provides a unifying, evidence-based framework to support and reinforce the skills learned in other therapies. It focuses on analyzing behaviors and teaching foundational skills like imitation and attention, which are critical for other therapies to be effective, and it provides consistent reinforcement to help generalize new skills to real-world situations. The integration of all these therapies creates a more holistic and customized treatment plan, leading to better overall progress and increased independence for the child.
For example, speech therapy will teach a child how to properly pronounce sounds and words but ABA therapy will help the child understand the word and when to use it.
How can I find out if my insurance covers ABA therapy?
We provide a benefits and eligibility check for you and let you know exactly what your insurance covers and what the process will cost you. It is likely that you will have deductibles and copays based on your insurance plan.
How is supervision provided?
The BCBA is the one who assesses your child, creates the treatment plan for your child and ensures that the plan is carried out properly on a consistent basis. The BCBA supervises the therapist as many times as necessary and on a weekly basis to ensure all programs within the therapy process are carried out properly and accurately, so that the best outcomes possible are obtained. The BCBA is an integral part of your child’s care and ABA therapy service.
